Let's find your driving path ๐Ÿ‘‹

Thanks for reaching out. Answer a few quick questions and we'll show you exactly what you need, then call you back to sort a time that suits.

First up, where are you at?

This decides your South Australian pathway.

Which country is your licence from?

Some countries convert with no driving test - let's check yours.

How long have you held that licence?

In SA, holding a licence 3+ years usually means a full licence rather than provisional.

How much driving have you actually done?

Be honest - it helps us recommend the right start.

Last step - where do we send your plan?

So we can hold your spot and call you back if you'd like.

How to get a driver's licence in South Australia

In short: get your learner's permit, hold it for 12 months (6 months if you're 25 or over), log 75 supervised hours including 15 at night, pass the Hazard Perception Test, then pass the practical driving test to be issued your P1. If you already hold an overseas licence, your path is usually much shorter — and from some countries there is no driving test at all.

The five steps, in order

  1. Pass the theory test and get your learner's permit. You can sit the theory test from age 16. Once you hold your permit you may drive with a qualified supervising driver.
  2. Hold the permit for the minimum period. 12 months if you are 17–24; 6 months if you are 25 or older.
  3. Log 75 hours of supervised driving, including at least 15 hours at night. Every hour of a paid lesson with us counts toward that total, and we sign your logbook on the spot.
  4. Pass the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). This is a computer-based test of how you spot and react to developing hazards. You must pass it before a P1 licence can be issued.
  5. Pass the practical driving test. In South Australia this is the Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) or a CBT&A competency assessment. We run VORT, and we supply the dual-control car. Pass, and you are issued your P1.

You then hold P1 for 12 months. With no breaches or suspensions you move to P2 automatically, and P2 lasts 24 months.

Converting an overseas licence in Adelaide

Which pathway applies depends on the country that issued your licence:

The licence class you end up on depends on how long you have held your existing licence: 3 years or more generally means a full SA licence, 1–3 years means P2, and under 1 year means P1.

Time limit: permanent residents and long-term visa holders must convert within 3 months of becoming a resident. Service SA confirms your exact class in every case.

Common questions

How much do driving lessons cost in Adelaide?

A 60-minute lesson is $110 and a 45-minute driving assessment is $90. Prepaid packages start at $525. Free pickup and drop-off is included in every lesson. See all prices and packages.

Do lessons with an instructor count toward my 75 supervised hours in SA?

Yes. Every paid hour you drive with us counts toward your 75 supervised hours, and we sign your logbook at the end of the lesson.

How many driving lessons will I need?

It depends entirely on where you're starting. Complete beginners usually get the basics in 10–15 hours and reach a confident, test-ready standard around 50+ hours. Experienced or overseas drivers are often ready in 3–7 hours. The 45-minute assessment exists to answer this precisely rather than guess.

Can I do the SA driving test in my own car?

You can, provided it is roadworthy, registered and meets the test requirements. Most students use our dual-control car instead, which is what we supply for every test we run. You can book a driving test with our car directly.

Are driving lessons available in Hindi or Punjabi in Adelaide?

Yes — lessons are available in English, Hindi and Punjabi. Our free road-rule explainer videos also carry voiceovers in Arabic, Bengali, Mandarin, Hindi, Nepali, Pashto, Persian (Farsi), Punjabi, Sinhala and Urdu.

Which Adelaide suburbs do you cover?

We work across Adelaide's eastern, north-eastern and southern suburbs from our base at Firle Plaza, with free pickup inside the service area. See the full list of suburbs we cover.
